Coal Region Connections: Paranormal Stories of the Coal Region

MANY PROMINENT PLACES THROUGHOUT THE COAL REGION ARE SAID TO HARBOR SPIRITS, GHOSTS, & PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Click LIKE if you are fascinated by stories of the supernatural or believe there are unexplained happenings going in your neighborhood.

Today's post was inspired by the book "Coal Country Ghosts, Legends, & Lore" written by Charles Adams III. Charlie was a 36 year radio veteran at WEEU-AM 830 Reading before retiring last fall. He still writes a travel column for the Sunday Reading Eagle & has authored over 25 books about ghosts, hauntings, legends, shipwrecks, & train wrecks in Pa., Jersey, New York, & Delaware.

How many heard about the "Lady in White" that wanders through the Summit Hill cemetary at the time of the full moon? Is Room 211 at the Inn of Jim Thorpe haunted? Does the Lehighton American Legion Post has a spirit named "Jim" & does it have its own ghostly hand print like the one at the "Old Jail" in Jim Thorpe? Ever hear the story about the "Hex Cat Farm" on the southern slope of the Second Mountain between Orwigsburg & Tumbling Run?

Other paranormal places listed in Charlie's book include: the old Kaier's Mansion (pictured below) & Smith Mansion in Mahanoy City; the former Gambrinus Restaurant (now Blue Mt. Summit) in West Penn Twp.; the Tamaqia Elks Lodge (pictured below); the old Bruno School in Kelayres (now the McAdoo Machine Co); the Angel Rose B&B in Pottsville.

See the "eternal" hand-print below from the "Old Jail" in Jim Thorpe. Some say this is the most enigmatic unexplained phenomenon of Pa.'s anthracite coal country. Charlie goes into great detail about this story plus the Legend of Glen Onoko--the waterfalls near Jim Thorpe that has claimed so many lives down through the years.

Do you believe there is a place close by that is haunted? Did your parents or grandparents ever share stories that curled your hair? We'd love to hear your COMMENTS below. And we strongly recommend Charlie Adams' book--it's a real pager turner!
