PennDOT to Improve Route 443 in Schuylkill County with Funding from Pennsylvania’s New Transportation Plan

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Thursday that work will begin Tuesday, Oct. 14, to resurface Route 443 between Route 61 and Lincoln Avenue in the North Manheim Township and Orwigsburg Borough, as a result of the state’s new transportation plan.

With Act 89 transportation funds, PennDOT will repair and repave Route 443, including shoulder and guide rail upgrades, and new pavement markings.

Beginning on Oct. 14 and continuing throughout construction, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by flaggers on weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Updates will be provided when available.

The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 31. All work on this project is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change. J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. is the general contractor on the $1,850,724 project.

Due to Act 89, more than $2.3 billion in statewide highway and bridge projects are beginning in 2014, $800 million more than what would have been available without Act 89. More than 200 of roughly 900 projects are beginning this year due to Act 89, which was signed by Gov. Tom Corbett in November 2013.
