Schuylkill Musicians: October 2014

Schuylkill Musicians:  October 2014

It is sad to hear that school districts around the country are losing funds to have music programs in schools. Some schools are even losing their marching bands. People don’t realize the benefits of being a musician.

Studies have shown that people who play music have happier lives and even increasing their years. Playing many instruments also better your respiratory system. On top of the medical benefits, playing music helps with brain functions (including mathematics, and reading comprehension skills), memory (something many of us need some days). There have also been signs of improved coordination.
Professionally playing music in front of people reduces the fear of talking in front of a group, which is one of the #1 fears in the world. Playing music also improves social skills. These are be a huge benefit for everyone. Dedication to an instrument builds discipline in your life and responsibility not to mention perseverance. Musicians have better time management skills, organization (in some cases).

One of the best benefits is that it relieves stress, something everyone could use more of.
It’s not to late though. Even if your school district has done away with music programs there are musicians out there. Reach out to other district bands for private lessons or even ask a neighbor. Schuylkill County has no shortage of musicians. If we ignore this short fall we could one day see a world where great music is only in history books.
