Coal Region Connections: Heisler's Dairy Bar

WHAT STARTED AS A SMALL ICE CREAM STAND 58 YEARS AGO HAS GROWN INTO THE COAL REGION'S PREMIER FAMILY ATTRACTION FROM APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER. Click LIKE if Heisler's Dairy Bar in the beautiful Lewistown Valley between Tamaqua & Pottsville is 1 of your favorite destinations.

In 1957 Morris Heisler (pictured below in the antique car) began making ice cream & opened the dairy bar. Shortly thereafter came a world-class miniature golf course, driving range, gift shop, arcade, & waffle house. Remember the Sunday evening organ music & Easter parades? Pictured below is Heisler's original crew from the 50s plus a 1960s aerial view.

Morris Heisler passed away in 1982 at the age of 75. His widow Pearl passes way in 1992 at the age of 83. Morris's nephew Len Ostergaard & his wife Ann continue the proud Heisler tradition today. In 2003, the original mini golf course was removed & 2 new 18 hole courses were constructed. The waffle House is closed to the public & used for private functions.

Heisler's is also home to the 2nd largest population of Purple Martins in Pa. Every year these birds return to Heisler's in early April from Central America & depart in mid-August. Each year the 14 birdhouses are taken down, cleaned, & freshly-painted for the Purple Martins return in spring. These birds help control the bug population in the Lewistown Valley.

Each year tens of thousands of people visit Heisler's Dairy Bar. What is your favorite feature at Heisler's? Mini golf? Their ice cream made on the premises? Driving range? Gift shop? Please comment below. For more info, visit www.heislersdairy.com & LIKE Heisler's Facebook fan page.
