Pottsville Detective Receiving Award for Working to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse

The Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center (SARCC) of Lebanon and Schuylkill Counties will be hosting their annual meeting with friends and donors at the Lebanon Country Club on April 13th.


SARCC is the sole provider of sexual assault services in Lebanon and Schuylkill Counties serving over 1100 men, women and children who have been victimized by sexual violence.
Five years ago, SARCC established the Children’s Hero Award which is presented to an individual or group that works to protect children from sexual abuse.

SARCC has announced that this year’s award recipient from Schuylkill County is Detective Joseph Welsh from the Pottsville Police Department.

Detective Joseph Welsh has been employed as a police officer for the Pottsville Bureau of Police since July of 2005. Det. Welsh held the title of patrolman until 2014 when he was promoted to the rank of corporal. In January of 2016, Det. Welsh was promoted to his current assignment with the Criminal Investigation Unit. As a member of this unit Det. Welsh specializes in investigating sexual assault allegations, child abuse cases, and all serious crimes. Prior to his employment with the Pottsville Police, Welsh was employed by Schuylkill County Children &Youth Services where he worked in the Child Protective Services Unit investigating allegations of child physical, mental and sexual abuse.

SARCC Staff nominated Detective Welsh because he commits his energy, time and expertise in seeing that each child who reports sexual violence is treated with dignity and respect.

Detective Welsh will accept his award at the SARCC’s Annual Dinner.
