Woman on Bicycle Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle on Friday

A woman on a bicycle was seriously injured Friday when she was struck by a vehicle.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, around 7:30am, Nina Day,  63, of Barnesville was seriously injured while riding a bicycle after being struck by a vehicle driven by Leonard Kurpell, 78, Mahanoy City.

Police say Kurpell was travelling eastbound on Foothill Street, in Ryan Township and approached a dip/rise in the road that partially obscured his view of the road ahead.

Day was travelling eastbound as well in front Kurpell.

When Kurpell crested the rise, he came upon a much slower Day on the bicycle and was unable to avoid striking the rear of the bicycle.

Day was thrown from her bicycle onto the roadside and suffered serious leg injuries.

Day was transported by the Ryan Township Ambulance to Medevac 4 and flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for her injuries.  Day was not wearing a helmet.

Kurpell was not injured.

Assisting at the scene were the Ryan Township Fire Company, Ryan Township Ambulance, and Rush Township Police.
