Lanier H Schlegel, age 78, of Hegins, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.

He was born on Wednesday, June 14, 1939, in Hegins, a son of the late Harlan E Schlegel and the late Elizabeth M Kukla Schlegel.

He was a 1957 graduate of Tri-Valley High School, a 1961 graduate of Kutztown University, received his Masters Degree from Arizona State University in 1965, and did PhD studies at Bucknell University, Harvard University, and Penn State University.

He served in the PA Army National Guard for eight years.

Lanier was a secondary science teacher at Boyertown Area High School; he then taught physics and chemistry at Tri-Valley High School; then physics and chemistry at Spring-Ford School District, Royersford for 18 years; was employed at Penn State University in the Nuclear Engineering Department; and retired from Shenandoah Area School District. He spent 11 years as a member of the Pottstown Police Department; where he served as an office supervisor, range instructor, and armorer. He spent over 33 years as a Deputy Conservation Office for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. He was a Radiological Instructor II, emeritus for FEMA/PEMA. Lanier was also a private pilot.

He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View.

He is survived by his wife Denise S Cronk Schlegel, to whom he was married for 26 years.

He is also survived by two daughters, Debra S Ross and her husband William of Bethlehem and Rebecca A Schelgel of Harrisburg; a son, Andrew D Schlegel of Philadelphia; and three granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Duane Bardo officiating.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday at the church.

Burial will be made in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Valley View.

Richard J. Blain, Sr., 73, of Swopes Valley Rd., Pine Grove, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at York Terrace.
Born on June 11, 1944 in Harrisburg, he was a son of the late William S., Sr. and Mary Beil Blain.
He was a member of the Red Suspenders Hunting Club and Kittatinny Hunting and Fishing Club, Pine Grove.
Richard worked for Guilford Mills, Pine Grove.
Preceding him in death were brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife 52 years, Joyce M. Adams Blain; three sons, Richard J. Blain, Jr. and James S. Blain, both of Pine Grove, Dean Blain of Lykens; three daughters, Tammy M. Houtz of Fredericksburg, Bonnie S. Cole of Pine Grove, Theresa Marchiano of Donaldson; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Lindsey of Harrisburg, Douglas Blain of Pine Grove; a sister Elizabeth Blanton of Pine Grove; numerous nieces and nephews.
All Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 3001 Old Gettysburg Rd., Camp Hill, Pa. 17011, in his memory.

Sophie P. Shaker, age 96, of the village of Trenton, died peacefully Thursday morning in the company of her family in Pipersville, PA. 

Born in Trenton she was the daughter of the late Demetri & Sophia (Hyrskanich) Pascavage. She was a graduate of Delano High School, resided most of her life in Trenton and was a life long member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Mahanoy City. 

She worked for many years at the former General Cigar Factory and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. 

Preceding her in death were her husband John in 1984, two infant twin sons and brothers Joseph and John and sisters Helen, Julia and Mary. 

Sophie is survived by 2 daughters Daria Bowman and her husband Joseph of Pipersville with whom she has resided the past few years, Nadine Waldman and her husband Harry of Villanova, PA and Boca Raton FL, a son Rod Shaker and his wife Janet of Frackville, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy to be celebrated by the Rev. James Carroll OFM on Monday morning at 11 AM from St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Mahanoy City. 

Interment will follow in the parish cemetery in Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the church on Monday morning from 10 AM until time of Liturgy. David D. Jarrett Funeral Home of Mahanoy City is in charge of arrangements.
