Police Warn of IRS Phone Scams

Police in Schuylkill County are warning residents about an IRS phone scam that has been reported to them.

Mahanoy City Police say that a borough resident reported receiving multiple phone calls from someone stating they are from the IRS.

The called told the victim would be put in jail if he did not send money to the caller. The caller realized that this was a scam, and did not provide the caller with any personal information or funds.

Mahanoy City Police Chief Kenneth Zipovsky said "Unfortunately phone scams are becoming more common. Residents are advised to not provide any personal information or money to a person who calls them unsolicited. Also be aware that the IRS will never contact a person via phone if there is an issue with their taxes. They will receive an official letter from the IRS in the mail if there are any problems that need to be addressed.".

If you should receive a call similar to the one listed above, take note of the caller's phone number and contact authorities.
