McAdoo Man Frozen for 12 Hours Survives Hypothermia

On February 21, 2015, the coroner declared Justin Smith, 25, of McAdoo, PA, dead.

He fell and was knocked unconscious while walking home as record cold temperatures dropped to -4 degrees fahrenheit overnight. He was found by his father resting atop a snowbank the next morning.

Paramedics on the scene from APTS and McAdoo Fire and Ambulance contacted the command center at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton and received orders from Gerald Coleman, DO at to begin CPR. A code blue was called, and 15 staffers at the hospital gathered in the emergency room, delivering continous CPR for over ninety minutes.

He was subsequently transferred by MedEvac to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest where he was placed on ECMO, also called extra corporal membrane oxygenation. This is his story of survival.
