Coal Region Connections: Yuengling Ice Cream Making a Coal Region Comeback

COAL REGION COMEBACKS ARE POSSIBLE!. Click LIKE if you're happy to see Yuengling's Ice Cream back in stores after a 29 year absence & tell us what is your favorite flavor.

When Prohibition swept the nation in 1920, breweries took a big hit. Yuengling Brewery, America's oldest brewery, countered by introducing the Yuengling Ice Cream Corporation headed by brewery boss Frank Yuengling. An ice cream plant was built at 5th & Mahantongo in Pottsville & it was a hit.

in 1930, the name was changed to Yuengling Dairy Products when the company started producing & distributing milk. Even during the darkest years of the Great Depression from 1929 to 1932, the ice cream plant expanded & branches were opened in Allentown & York. In 1935--2 years after Prohibition's repeal, Frank Yuengling went back to run the brewery & Fred Yuengling took over as president of the dairy operation. He was succeeded in 1963 by "Fritz" Yuengling. In 1985 after celebrating 65 years in business, the last cartons of Yuengling's ice cream were produced. The ice cream plant closed & was later donated to St. Patrick's Church.

In 2013, David Yuengling, Fritz's son, hooked up with Rob Boharod & decided to relaunch Yuengling's ice cream. Earlier this year, a dozen flavors of all-natural, hormone-free Yuengling's ice cream began to appear at coal region stores & beyond. The ice cream relaunch received local, regional & national news coverage. It was recently announced that 2 new seasonal flavors will be added to the lineup. Yuengling's ice cream is produced at the same facility in the Lewistown Valley between Tamaqua & Pottsville that makes the famous Leiby's ice cream. Now, Schuylkill County is home to not 2 but 3 great ice cream names--Yuengling's, , Heisler's, & Leiby's.
