American Red Cross Assisting 12 After Fire in Mahanoy City

The American Red Cross is assisting 12 people after a fire in Mahanoy City Saturday evening.

At 6:35pm, Saturday, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 700 Block of East Pine Street in Mahanoy City for a house fire.

Mahanoy City Police Officer Thomas Rentschler was first on-scene and found fire climbing the chimney between the rear of the homes at 729 and 731 East Pine.

As Mahanoy City Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz arrived on scene, the first was upgraded to a 2nd alarm and eventually a 3rd alarm calling in additional units from around Schuylkill County and part of Luzerne.

The fire was brought under control within an hour and crews began clearing the scene by 8:00pm.

In all, the homes from 725 through 737 all suffered some sort of damage ranging from fire damage to just smoke and water with others reporting some minor damage.  At least two of the homes were said to have been vacant.

According to the American Red Cross, 4 families that include 12 people are being as assisted including food, clothing, and lodging.

A State Police Fire Marshal has been called to determine an exact cause.
