A man was taken into custody in Mahanoy City after an incident on Friday morning.
According to court documents, on Friday morning, Mahanoy City Borough Police were called to the Hi Rise for a report of a domestic disturbance.
When Mahanoy City Patrolman Derek Weicikosky arrived, he was directed to an apartment on the ground floor where he could hear a verbal disturbance coming from inside.
Patrolman Weicikosky learned that 29-year-old Daniel "Lance" Lopez and a woman had gotten into an argument that turned physical.
The woman had reportedly locked herself in a bathroom to get away from him, but Lopez got in, drug her out of the bathroom, then began to punch her multiple times and put his hands around her neck.
During the course of the investigation, Lopez and the victim had been separated to be questioned.
Mahanoy Township Police arrived to assist, and the two officers returned to the apartment, where Lopez was, to inform him that he was going to be taken into custody for domestic assault. When they entered, Lopez was holding his 22-month-old child and refused to put the child down and be taken into custody.
At this time, additional backup was requested calling in State Police and officers from Frackville, Rush Township, Ashland, and West Mahanoy Township.
The backup officers arrived, and Lopez was eventually taken into custody after he allowed a woman from a neighboring room take the child.
Patrolman Weicikosky charged Lopez with strangulation, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful restraint resulting in serious injury, simple assault, and resisting arrest.
He was arraigned my Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah, on Friday afternoon on the above charges and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $100,000 straight cash bail.
