The Pennsylvania State Police and local animal welfare advocates are investigating a case of animal cruelty after a dog was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in a wooded area of Frailey Township.
Troopers from the Schuylkill Haven barracks responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, 2025, after someone reported discovering a deceased dog near a walking trail off Fountain Road, north of Donaldson. Upon arrival, investigators found the body of an adult black Labrador retriever mix, wearing a rusted chain-type collar. The animal appeared to have been shot at least seven times in the legs and back. Bullet casings found at the scene are believed to be from a .45 caliber weapon.
No suspects have been identified at this time, and authorities are working to determine who owned the dog and the events that led to its death. The investigation is ongoing.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has condemned the act and is now offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
“This dog endured the agony of being shot over and over and the terror of being abandoned in the woods to bleed out, and whoever attacked him is still at large,” said Heather Carlson, Senior Director of Media Relations for PETA. “Nothing can undo this dog’s suffering, but at least the person who caused it can be brought to justice—and PETA is urging anyone with information to come forward immediately before they hurt someone else.”
PETA also warned that individuals who abuse animals often pose a broader risk to the community, as such acts can be a precursor to other forms of violence.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA at (570) 345-3540 or the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven at (570) 754-4600. All tips will be kept confidential.
