Rite Aid has announced the closure of five stores in Schuylkill County as part of its ongoing efforts to restructure under bankruptcy protection, further reducing the company’s presence across the region.
The closures come in two separate waves following the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2023, which has already seen Rite Aid’s national footprint shrink from over 2,300 locations to approximately 1,200.
In the second batch of closures, the following Schuylkill County locations were listed for closure:
- 15 West Centre Street, Mahanoy City
- 205 Center Street, Tamaqua
- 44 Kings Village, Minersville
Most recently, Rite Aid included two additional local stores in a third round of closures announced in a bankruptcy court filing on Friday:
- 452 South Lehigh Avenue, Frackville
- 15 South Main Street, Shenandoah
This brings the total number of Schuylkill County Rite Aid stores marked for closure to five.
The closures are part of Rite Aid’s broader efforts to reduce debt, exit unprofitable markets, and reposition the company in a competitive and shifting retail pharmacy landscape. The company has faced growing financial pressure amid declining revenue, increased competition from larger rivals, and rising legal costs tied to opioid-related lawsuits.
Rite Aid has not provided specific closing dates for the affected locations, but store liquidation processes are expected to begin shortly.
Customers with prescriptions at closing stores will be notified and given options to transfer their medications to nearby Rite Aid locations or competitors.
