The generous offer will match every dollar donated to the fund through Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 2025, up to $25,000. The scholarship fund, which requires a minimum of $50,000 to be fully endowed, has already received more than $12,000 in contributions from alumni, parents, and friends.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to ensure that Jack’s legacy of service and devotion to Marian Catholic lives on,” said David Bielen ’69, P ’91, GP ‘24, Chair of the school’s Board of Directors. “His humility, grace, and tireless service have left a lasting impression on all of us. It is our job as a Marian Family to carry on Mr. Malarkey’s legacy for years to come. How special would it be for Jack to have the largest endowment at Marian? I’m calling on every Marian alumnus and every Marian family to make a gift to the scholarship fund of any amount so we can secure this $25,000 matching gift.”
Mr. Malarkey, a 1951 graduate of St. Jerome’s High School, dedicated decades of his life to Marian Catholic as a teacher, coach, and principal. Even after retirement, his devotion never waned—whether substitute teaching, volunteering at the concession stand, or cheering on the Colts from the stands, Mr. Malarkey remained a constant, beloved presence in the school community.
Known fondly as “Mr. Marian,” his influence shaped generations of students, faculty, and families. In lieu of flowers, the Malarkey family has asked for memorial contributions to be directed to the scholarship fund or to St. John XXIII Parish in Tamaqua.
The scholarship will provide tuition assistance to future Marian Catholic students, including children and grandchildren of alumni, ensuring Mr. Malarkey’s mission of accessible Catholic education continues for years to come.
