James J. Mengel
, 58, a resident of Pottsville, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2nd, 2025.

James was born in Pottsville, the son of the late Mildred (Maroukis) Mengel and Carl Mengel of Pottsville. He attended Pottsville High School, and was last employed the the Pottsville Area School District in the maintenance department of the high school. Prior to that, he worked as a tree surgeon for Jaflo of Allentown.

A former member of St. Joseph's Church in Pottsville, James was an altar server in his younger years. He was currently a member of St. Patrick's Church. James was always joking around and had a knack for imitating people, and loved spending time with his family and friends. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his father Carl Mengel, James is survived by two sisters, Catharine Lukach and Lynn (Mengel) Memeke. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Nicole Lukach, Jojo Lukach, Natalie Mengel, Joshua Senkus and Javon Memeke, along with great nieces and great nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2025 at the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, 515 West Market Street, Pottsville. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing at the funeral home from 9-11 AM prior to the service.

James will be laid to rest at the Schuylkill Memorial Park, immediately following the service.

On June 3, 2025, Mamie Evans Wetzel was called home to heaven to be with her Savior Jesus Christ. Born on January 22, 1932, in Locustdale, Pennsylvania, Mamie was the daughter of Albert and Isabelle Evans. Mamie graduated as valedictorian from Butler Township High School in the class of 1950. In 1951, Mamie married William Wetzel. For the next fifty-three years, Mamie and Bill were inseparable, serving as a shining example of what married love can be until Bill’s death in 2004. Together they raised three children in Locustdale. Their home was always an open and welcoming place for friends and family. Mamie was a lifelong, active member of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ in Ashland, Pennsylvania. Mamie was a founding member of the Jolly Players Card Club, and, over the years, she enjoyed many adventures traveling with her Bill and their friends.

Mamie is survived by her sons, Lee and Jerry Wetzel, and her daughter Lisa (Wetzel) Dinger. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Tom Wetzel, Rebecca Wetzel, Kathryn (Wetzel) Kovalenko, Dana (Dinger) Fisher and Samantha (Dinger) Pogash as well as four great-grandchildren.

Public visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025 at Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ located at 2400 Centre Street, Ashland, PA 17921. A funeral service will follow at the church at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow immediately after.

Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home Inc, 901 Centre St, Ashland PA 17921 has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Elizabeth Miller, 68, former Ashland resident, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, East Norwegian St., Pottsville. Funeral arrangements will be announced. 

The Richard W. Fritz Funeral Home, Ashland, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
