Third Class Petty Officer Ronald Yuhas, a dedicated and courageous member of the United States Navy, passed while serving his country on February 27, 1969, at the age of 20. Born in Shenandoah on December 25, 1948, Ronald served his country with honor and distinction.

After graduating from high school, Ronald enlisted in the Navy, where he became a member of the 1301st Engineering Combat Battalion. His service took him to significant locations, including Normandy, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes in Europe, as well as the Middle East and the Philippines.

As a Boatswain's Mate 3, Ronald was aboard the USS Mount McKinley when it anchored off the coast of Da Nang Vietnam, in February of 1969. During a critical mission aboard a Landing Craft Utility, he was delivering munitions from the Mount McKinley when the vessel came under attack from North Vietnamese rockets and his landing craft suffered a direct hit, resulting in a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of more than 25 sailors and wounded many others. Ronald was missing for two days before being found in the harbor and was declared deceased on February 27, 1969.

With the consent of his family, Seaman Yuhas was interred in the U.S. Naval Cemetery in Guam. His parents were informed that his remains could not be positively identified, leading them to consent to the overseas burial. With the recent advancement of DNA technology and means of positive identification, his family recently arranged for his disinterment and transportation back to the United States.

Third Class Petty Officer Ronald Yuhas will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Arlington National Cemetery at 11 AM on Monday, June 23rd, 2025.

Seaman Yuhas will return to his hometown of Shenandoah, where relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, June 12th, 2025 from 11 AM until 1 PM at the Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah.
