Schuylkill County Man Accused of Breaking into Home, Threatening to Kill Residents

A St. Clair man is facing a slate of felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he broke into a home armed with weapons, threatened to kill multiple people, and was found in possession of methamphetamine early Thursday morning.
According to the St. Clair Borough Police Department, officers were dispatched around 12:37 a.m. on July 3 to 106 North Second Street for a report of a man breaking a window and threatening to harm the residents. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Kevin Alan Smith Jr., was reportedly armed with a bat and a knife and yelling that he would kill everyone inside.

Officers from Pottsville and St. Clair arrived to find Smith outside the property. A pat-down search revealed a knife in his pocket, along with a small clear bag containing a white crystal-like substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Police say the incident began after Smith confronted a resident of the home in the parking lot, accusing him of providing drugs to a woman known to both men. The man told officers that Smith threatened to kill everyone in the building.  The man managed to get inside and lock the door, but about an hour later, he heard banging and saw his door covered in boot prints and damage near the lock.

The man said Smith eventually smashed a kitchen window and climbed partially inside while holding a bat. According to investigators, Smith reportedly said, “I told you I was serious,” prompting the victim to call 911 again. Officers documented a broken window with blood droplets, a blood-covered towel allegedly provided to Smith after he cut himself, and a Louisville Slugger baseball bat with fresh damage and smeared blood.

During questioning, Smith admitted to making threats and striking the door with the bat. He also claimed he had consumed four shots of vodka at a local bar earlier in the night, which he described as “a lot” for him. Police noted that Smith had bloodshot eyes, smelled strongly of alcohol, and appeared intoxicated.

Witnesses reported that Smith also threatened a woman earlier in the evening at the Sand Castle bar. The woman told police that patrons had to remove Smith after he allegedly tried to jump over the counter while yelling threats, saying he would be waiting to “slit her throat.”

Smith was charged with:
  • Felony Burglary
  • Two counts of Misdemeanor Terroristic Threats
  • Misdemeanor Possession of an Instrument of Crime
  • Misdemeanor Simple Assault
  • Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct
  • Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief
  • Misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Summary Offense of Public Drunkenness
  • Summary Harassment
Smith was arraigned before on-call Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli and committed to Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $100,000 straight cash bail.
