HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is urging consumers to immediately discard certain raw milk products after routine testing confirmed contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The advisory applies to Sunshine Dairy brand raw milk purchased between August 5 and August 15, 2025, in Berks, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties. Testing is required for all raw milk sold in Pennsylvania, and recent samples from Sunshine Dairy were found to be contaminated.
The affected milk was sold in plastic gallon containers directly from the dairy at 9400 Old Route 22 in Bethel, Berks County, as well as through three retail outlets:
- Swatty Creek Farms, 7725 Lancaster Avenue, Myerstown, Berks County
- Shady Breeze Farm – Corn Crib, 753 PA-419, Myerstown, Lebanon County
- The Farm Store, 113 E. Norwegian Street, Pottsville, Schuylkill County
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a potentially serious infection. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. The illness primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infections in newborns, or stillbirth.
Current Status
At this time, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the contaminated milk. However, health officials recommend that anyone who consumed Sunshine Dairy raw milk during the affected dates contact their healthcare provider if they develop symptoms.
