Schuylkill County SPCAs Announce Temporary Intake Closures Amid Parvovirus Concerns

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY - Two county animal shelters have announced temporary closures to animal intake in response to parvovirus concerns.

Hillside SPCA Quarantines Shelter After Positive Cases

The Hillside SPCA in Pottsville announced Thursday that two stray dogs recently brought to their shelter tested positive for parvovirus (parvo), a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus affecting dogs.

Although current shelter animals are vaccinated, officials said the facility will be placed under quarantine for the next two weeks as a precaution. During this time:

  • No new animals will be accepted.

  • Adoptions will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

  • Volunteer activity will be limited to reduce risk and ensure strict safety protocols.

“The health and safety of the animals always come first,” the Hillside SPCA said in a statement. “We understand this may cause inconvenience, but situations like this highlight the importance of keeping pets up to date on all recommended vaccines.”

Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA Takes Preventative Measures

Meanwhile, Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA in Pine Grove reported that no cases of parvovirus have been detected at its facility. However, in light of confirmed cases elsewhere in Schuylkill County, the shelter announced it is taking proactive steps by temporarily suspending intake as well.

“Our facility remains parvo-free, but we are closing intake until the situation is under control,” shelter officials shared. “These steps are being taken to protect our animals, staff, and the rescue community.”
