Geisinger to Expand Schuylkill County Cancer Center

Geisinger is planning a $2.5 million expansion of its cancer treatment facility in Pottsville, a move health system officials say will significantly increase access to care for Schuylkill County residents while allowing more patients to receive treatment close to home.
The project will expand the Geisinger Cancer Center Pottsville at 1 E. Norwegian St., adding nearly 2,000 square feet to the existing 3,760-square-foot space. Once complete, the cancer center will occupy the entire first floor of the building.

The expansion will include additional exam rooms, infusion treatment spaces and a dedicated blood draw area, effectively doubling patient care areas. The project will also create additional space for clinical staff and offices to support growing patient demand.

“Geisinger is committed to enhancing care for our neighbors across the region,” said Alex Zimmerman, chief administrative officer for Geisinger’s central region. “As a lifelong resident of Schuylkill County, I’m proud to see this expansion as it will allow more of our friends and family to receive these critical services locally, without having to travel.”

The center currently provides hematology, radiation oncology and infusion services. Health officials say the expansion comes as demand for cancer care continues to rise due to earlier diagnoses and an aging population.

By increasing treatment capacity in Pottsville, Geisinger hopes to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the county for specialized care.

“Expanding our cancer services in Schuylkill County allows more patients the ability to stay in the region, closer to home, while undergoing treatment,” said Rajiv Panikkar, M.D., chair of the Geisinger Cancer Institute. “Our cancer program features top-tier physicians and advanced practice providers who work with comprehensive multidisciplinary care teams while also providing the latest technologies and clinical trials for our patients.”

The Pottsville cancer center first opened in 2018 and works alongside larger Geisinger facilities, including Geisinger Medical Center and the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

The Pottsville expansion is part of a broader regional investment in outpatient cancer care. Geisinger recently opened a cancer center in Dickson City and is also constructing a new facility in Lewisburg.

To minimize disruption, construction in Pottsville will be completed in phases. Services will remain open throughout the project, and a tenant currently occupying part of the building will relocate to the second floor.

Design work is underway, with construction expected to begin later this year. The project is slated for completion in 2027.

Geisinger also provides other outpatient services locally, including family medicine, women’s health, pediatric subspecialties, laboratory and imaging services.

Officials say the goal remains simple: keeping care closer to home for Schuylkill County families.
