The Schuylkill County Band celebrated a historic milestone this past weekend as students, educators, and community members gathered to mark the organization’s 50th anniversary with a special golden jubilee concert.
The event honored the band’s rich musical legacy while highlighting the future of music education in the county. A total of 131 student musicians from 13 schools participated in the anniversary festival performance.
The Schuylkill County Band was established in 1975 through the combination of the Northern Schuylkill County Band and the Twin Valley Band Festival. Since its founding, the festival has been held annually, with only two exceptions — 1976, in observance of the American Bicentennial, and 2021, when the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The original lineup of schools participating in the festival included Blue Mountain, Minersville, Nativity BVM, North Schuylkill, Pottsville, St. Clair, Schuylkill Haven, Shenandoah Valley, and Tamaqua.
Over the years, the ensemble has evolved while continuing to showcase the region’s student musical talent. Schools that have participated over the decades include Cardinal Brennan, Gillingham Charter School, and St. Clair Area.
Today, the festival features student musicians from Blue Mountain, Mahanoy Area, Marian Catholic, Minersville Area, Nativity BVM, North Schuylkill, Pine Grove Area, Pottsville Area, Schuylkill Haven Area, Shenandoah Valley, Tamaqua Area, Tri-Valley, and Williams Valley.
Bringing the festival’s history full circle, the anniversary concert was led by Guest Conductor Dr. Andrew Yozviak, Director of Bands at West Chester University. His appearance served as a tribute to the county band’s inaugural festival in 1975, which was guest-conducted by the late Dr. Paul Carson of what was then West Chester State College.
One of the evening’s major highlights was the induction of Mr. Robert Hunt into the Schuylkill County Band Directors Hall of Fame. Hunt served as the Director of the Tamaqua Area High School Band from 1964 to 1977 and was the original Host Director for the county band’s first festival.

The Hall of Fame award was presented by current Tamaqua Area High School Band Director Mark E. Beltz along with David R. Schmaldienst, a former Tamaqua band director and longtime colleague of Hunt.
The evening also welcomed a special guest with deep ties to the festival’s history. Ms. Sally Bair, an original county band director, attended the concert. Bair served as band director at Minersville Area High School and was among the first women to lead a high school band program in Schuylkill County.
The festival also recognized the achievements of today’s student musicians. Ben Bux of Mahanoy Area High School was named the recipient of the annual $500 Schuylkill County Band Scholarship. Bux was selected by a vote of county band directors based on recommendations from school principals, music teachers, and other professional music references.
As the organization celebrates five decades of musical excellence, planning is already underway for the next festival.
The 2027 Schuylkill County Band Festival is scheduled for February 25–27, 2027, and will be hosted by Shenandoah Valley High School, with John P. Shoener serving as Host Director.
