A man is dead following a several-hour standoff with the Pennsylvania State Police that shut down part of Route 209 in Schuylkill County Monday morning.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were dispatched to the area of Valley Street in New Philadelphia around 10:00 a.m. Monday for a report of a domestic disturbance.
While responding to the incident, police say the situation escalated when the man fired shots at responding troopers.
As a result, Valley Street and Route 209 were shut down while authorities worked to contain the situation. The closure affected traffic through the borough and prompted a significant police presence in the area.
The standoff continued for several hours as state police handled the situation.
Authorities say the incident came to an end around 2:00 p.m.
According to state police, no troopers were injured during the gunfire. The man involved in the standoff died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the home.
No additional information about the individual has been released at this time.
The Schuylkill County Coroner's Office is also at the scene.
