Tamaqua Area’s Leah Black Earns Inaugural PHEAA/PIAA All-Academic Athletic Team Scholarship

Tamaqua Area senior Leah Black has been recognized among the top student-athletes in Pennsylvania, earning selection to the inaugural All-Academic Athletic Team announced by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association in partnership with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.
Black is one of just 24 students statewide, one male and one female from each of the PIAA’s 12 districts, selected for the honor, which recognizes excellence in academics, athletics, and leadership. As part of the recognition, she will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support her post-secondary education, along with commemorative honors.

The program, launched in 2026, highlights student-athletes who exemplify dedication both in the classroom and in competition. Candidates were nominated by their schools and evaluated based on a rigorous set of criteria, including a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.60, participation in multiple sports, and demonstrated leadership within their school and community.

“This inaugural class of student-athletes represents the very best of what interscholastic athletics can offer,” said Mark Byers, executive director of the PIAA. “Their dedication in the classroom, their commitment to their teams, and their leadership within their communities exemplify the true meaning of being a student-athlete.”

Officials from PHEAA also praised the initiative, noting it not only recognizes achievement but helps connect students with opportunities for higher education.

“This scholarship program is a great way to ensure students are aware that PHEAA is here to help them find an affordable path to higher education,” said James Steeley. “At the same time, it allows us to give these exceptional young athletes the recognition they deserve.”

PIAA leadership emphasized that the honor goes beyond athletics, celebrating character and perseverance.

“This program and these student-athletes exemplify the value of discipline, integrity, and perseverance,” said Frank Majikes.

Wayne Fontana, chairman of the PHEAA Board of Directors, added that the scholarship aims to promote postsecondary education while recognizing the hard work of Pennsylvania’s top multi-sport athletes.

Out of 193 nominees across the Commonwealth, Black’s selection places her among an elite group of student-athletes who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically.
