Firefighters freed a tractor-trailer driver whose legs were trapped following a crash on Interstate 81 South in Tremont Township early Wednesday, September 23, 2026. State police said the driver suffered a fractured femur.
Tractor-Trailer Leaves Interstate 81
According to Pennsylvania State Police at Jonestown, the tractor-trailer was traveling south near mile marker 104.8, north of Molleystown Road, when it left the roadway and struck a guide rail along the left side of the highway.
The truck then jackknifed and came to rest facing north, police said.
Firefighters Free Trapped Driver
Pine Grove Township Fire & Rescue said the initial dispatch reported a crash with unknown injuries. The call was upgraded to an entrapment while firefighters were responding.
Arriving crews reported that the tractor-trailer had rolled over and that the driver’s legs were pinned beneath the dashboard.
Firefighters used rescue tools to free the driver in just under 30 minutes. The department said a second alarm was requested for additional rescue personnel because many volunteers had already left the area for work.
Fire units from Pine Grove Township and Pine Grove responded to the scene. Fire police from Frailey Township, Reilly Township and Tremont assisted with traffic control.
Crews also contained materials described by the fire department as hazardous that spilled from the trailer. The department did not identify the materials.
Driver Transported to Hospital
State police said the driver was transported to a hospital in Hershey with a fractured femur.
The public crash report did not identify the driver or state what caused the tractor-trailer to leave the roadway. The crash remains under investigation.
