Hillside SPCA’s Big Dog Building Rebuild Moves Forward

Construction progress on Hillside SPCA’s new Big Dog Building

POTTSVILLE — Construction is moving forward on Hillside SPCA’s new Big Dog Building after structural problems forced the shelter to replace the aging facility rather than renovate it.

The former building has been fully demolished, and a new pole building has been installed. Concrete work is expected during the first week of November, followed by construction of interior walls and finishes, according to an , update from the shelter.

Structural Problems Required a Full Rebuild

The project is part of Hillside’s broader Capital Campaign, which includes addressing decades of wear and tear at its facilities and adding a veterinary clinic.

As Phase III of the campaign began, code enforcement identified serious structural deficiencies in the Big Dog Building. Those findings required Hillside to shift its plans from renovation to a full demolition and rebuild.

Shelter officials credited community support with helping keep the project moving despite the change.

“Rebuilding the aging Big Dog Building with a safer, more functional space designed to better serve the dogs in our care as well as the needs of staff and volunteers is tremendously important to our mission,” said Shelter Manager Sherrie Schafer.

Cat and Small Dog Building Renovations Planned

Once the Big Dog Building is complete, Hillside plans to begin Phase IV of the campaign, which will include renovations to the Cat Building and Small Dog Building.

Hillside thanked the individuals, businesses, organizations and volunteers who have contributed donations, materials, services and labor to the improvements. Continued support will help the shelter complete the remaining projects and provide safe, comfortable spaces for animals in its care.
