Submitted Photo / Taken by Ray Silcox
The Schuylkill County Fair Guide wins again! This is the second year in a row that the Schuylkill County Fair was chosen for the top prize of first place in the Non-Premium Tabloid category of the Communication Competition at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs, PSACF.

The 2015 Schuylkill County Fair Guide was themed “Harvest the Fun” with its photo front cover of Aubrey Harrington participating in the petal tractor pull. This photo was personally selected by Teri Paulin editor of the South Schuylkill News. The photo was taken by the Fair’s photographer Ray Silcox in 2014. 106 fairs in the state are eligible to compete for this coveted prize at the PSACF convention held recently at Hershey. This is the second year in a row that the Fair Guide has won first place. Over the course of the last nine years it has placed a total of five times. This year brings the total number of first places to four with a second place finish with the 2013 Guide.

The first place winning Guide of 2015 was under new management for its publication. The South Schuylkill News was purchased by the Reading Eagle in the spring of 2015. This brought new players to the team that made this an award winning publication.

Starting at the top, the project was over seen by Grant Mahon as the design editor for the Guide. Teri Paulin editor of the South Schuylkill News also over saw the Guide’s development with contributing writers/reporters that included Shea Singley and Jonathan B. Paroby as a  photographer. Gary Visgatis was the page designer/ graphic artist for the fair’s map page. Gary worked up a sweat walking all over the grounds on a hot June day last summer to understand the layout of the grounds. He says that the sweat was worth it because the fairgrounds lie in a beautiful setting with a number of venues and environments. The entire staff of the Reading Eagle under the skillful designs of Kris Werley manager put together the ads in the Guide. Denise Schaeffer spent a great deal of time corresponding back and forth on Ads with Kim Morgan of the Fair as she coordinated the sales of advertisement which helps to underwrite some of the cost of producing the Guide. The Fair’s photographer/webmaster Ray Silcox contributed a number of photo to the Guide. Kim Morgan, marketing and public relations, contributed a number of articles about what Fair goers could look forward to when visiting the 2015 Schuylkill County Fair. The 2014 Fair Guide was published by the semi-retired Bill Knecht of South Schuylkill Printing and Publishing. The Fair Guide is steep in the rich “soil” of Schuylkill County and will hopefully continue to be focused here in Schuylkill County under the direction of the Reading Eagle.

Reading Eagle publishes about 20,000 plus guides for the SCF for distribution around the area prior to the week long event and for Fair goers to pick up at the Fair’s gate during operating hours. Circulation of the Guide two to three weeks before the actual fair seems to get people excited and talking about what is to come each year at the Fair.

The Schuylkill County Fair hopes to keep the winning tradition going again with the 2016 Fair Guide. This year’s Fair’s theme is “We have good things Growing.” The Fair’s web site at www.schuylkillfair.com which recently won an award for design and functionality is currently hosting a public survey where individuals visiting can cast their vote for this year’s Fair logo and font selection for the theme of “We have Good Things Growing.” The Fair encourages reader’s to visit the fair web site and participate early in the creation of the 2016 Schuylkill County Fair.
