Schuylkill County Obituaries for 09/24/2017

-----------------------------------------------------

James T. McNulty, age 79, of Schuylkill Haven passed away on Thursday, September 21st, peacefully in his home surrounded by his children. Born in Arnots Addition, PA on June 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Michael W. and Margaret (Evans) McNulty. Jim, as his friends knew him, was a graduate of the school of hard knocks. He was a self-made man who lived by his word. He was much admired as a hardworking man, always willing to lend a hand or help someone in need. Those who knew him could tell you he had a devilish sense of humor and he loved to tell or play a good joke. He also was an infamous storyteller who loved to tell people the wild stories of his youth with a twinkle in his eye. But he also was an intellectual man who enjoyed anyone that dared to challenge him at a game of checkers or a hand of cards. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed a trip to the casino. But above all, he loved and valued his family. To him his family was everything. Jim worked many trades throughout his life, such as a steeple jack, as well as being a laborer in the coal mines, foundry, and construction. In 1962, he learned how to install carpeting and opened his own business "Jim McNulty Flooring." He grew this installation business with the help of his two sons, eventually retiring from it. But he couldn't sit still long and opted to open his own floor covering store. There were a few runs in different locations before he opened McNulty's Floor Covering with his oldest son Jim Jr. in Pottsville, PA. This business flourished and expanded into McNulty's Building Supply, Inc. Jim was a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Schuylkill Haven. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by Gloria, his beloved wife of 60 years, two infant sons who died shortly after birth, four brothers: William, John, Michael, and Joseph, and two sisters: Theresa Purcell and Margaret Hesse. Jim is survived by 2 sons: James J. McNulty and his wife Nancy, Schuylkill Haven and Thomas M. McNulty and his wife Bettyjean, Schuylkill Haven; a daughter Gloria M. Valentine and her husband Richard, Hometown; 7 grandchildren: Thomas, Nancy, Jodi, Angela, Eric, Amanda, and Tyler; 12 great-grandchildren: Riley, Thomas, Talan, Khalle, Landon, Dalton, Tyce, Braydon, Bryler, Taige, Emma, And Hudson; a sister Loretta Sponhouse, Port Carbon, and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Schuylkill Haven at 10:30AM on Wednesday, September 27th, with Msgr. Edward S. Zemanick officiating. Relatives and Friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday morning from 8-10AM at Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home 208 Pike St. Port Carbon.
