Local Hero Arrives Home in Mahanoy City to Be Laid to Rest

The body of Army Specialist Peter Thomas Luddy was brought back to Mahanoy City Thursday evening.

Luddy, 21, was serving in the U.S. Army Reserves 811th in Rainelle, West Virginia for his annual training when he passed away  Tuesday, May 8th, 2018 in Carillion Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., following a traumatic brain injury while on a training mission.

On Thursday, Luddy's body was flown to Philadelphia where his body was then escorted by the Pennsylvania State Police and Patriot Guard back to Mahanoy City.

Prior to arriving in Mahanoy City, the Schuylkill County Sheriff, Mahanoy City Police, Mahanoy Township Police, and Ryan Township Ambulance joined the escort into the borough.

Borough residents lined the streets and the Mahanoy City Fire Department erected an arch with their ladder trucks at Main and Centre Streets.

Luddy's journey back to Mahanoy City ended at Louis D. Truskowsky Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. at 300 West Center Street Mahanoy City.  Catwissa Street was closed off Thursday evening where Luddy's flag draped casket was carried into into the funeral home.

Peter graduated Mahanoy Area class of 2015 and was attending Penn State.
