Man Taken to Hospital After Ryan Township Crash

A Mahanoy City man was taken to the hospital after a crash in Ryan Township on Wednesday morning.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around 7:30am on Barnesville Drive.

Police say Leonard Kurpell, 79, of Mahanoy City was travelling eastbound on Route 54 (Barnesville Drive) when he failed to recognize cars were stopped for a school bus.

Kurpell swerved to the right, driving part way up a roadside embankment, crossed a driveway at 873 Barnesville Drive, before striking a stone retaining wall next to the driveway.

The vehicle came to a rest after striking the rear tires of a tractor trailer that was also stopped for the school bus.

According to the police report, Kurpell was not injured in the crash but was taken to an area hospital by Ryan Township Ambulance after complaining of chest pains.

Kurpell's vehicle was severely damaged and was towed from the scene.

The tractor trailer did not sustain any damage other than a scuffed tire.

Assisting at the scene were the Ryan Township Fire and Hometown Fire Companies.
