On Sunday, October 14, 2018, Ronald R. Rehrer, loving father of two, grandfather of four and great-grandfather of seven, passed away peacefully at the age of 89.

Later known as Ronnie, Ron or Pop, Ronald was born on July 15, 1929 in Pine Grove, PA to Harry and Lyda (Schneck) Rehrer. He was a 1947 graduate of Pine Grove and subsequently worked a short stint as a “grease monkey” at the Red Arrow. He served as a Corporal with the Army Security Agency (ASA) from 1947 to 1950 and was stationed at Herzo Base during the occupation of Germany following WW II. Pop would later teasingly describe himself to his great-grandchildren as a spy during the cold war. On October 2, 1954 he married Jean Mae Shollenberger and would happily raise two children, Bonnie and Randy, in Pine Grove while working as a “telephone man.” Ron retired after 38 years with the phone company and loved to reminisce about installing some of the first phones in rural houses in Schuylkill County. He was proud of his heritage and wouldn’t hesitate to tell anyone he met that he was from Pine Grove, Pennsylvania.

Ronald was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading about military history and, as a self-proclaimed “old Dutchman,” had a passion for researching local family histories. He spent a lot of his time at the driving range or playing rounds at Monroe Valley and took great satisfaction in having inspired two subsequent generations of golfers in the family. His later years were defined by endless love and devotion to his family; Pop cherished taking pictures and “wideos” at family functions and sharing them by text and email, sometimes at 5 a.m., with everyone he knew. He had a passion for life, evidenced by his Facebook bio “Just an 88 year old trying to survive because it’s so much fun being here yet!!!”

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Lyda, his wife Jean, his brother Wayne and Uncle Monroe. He is survived by his children Bonnie (Jose) Valls and Randolph (Cindy) Rehrer; his grandchildren Angelene (Jimmy) Starnes, Jennifer (Kris) Strausser, Justin (Kathleen) Rehrer and Jocelyn Rehrer; and his seven great-grandchildren.

A grave-side service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Pine Grove.

Contributions in Ronald’s memory may be made to the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Foundation or the charity of your choice.
