Hundreds Attend to Support Scholarship Fund with Bundukie Challenge

On Saturday evening, the 2nd Annual Bundukie Challenge was held at the Glover's Hill Athletic Club in Shenandoah.

Over 200 people attended the event that benefited the William "Babe" Conroy Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship is awarded to a Senior Shenandoah Valley Baseball Player who has played all 4 years and will be continuing their education in college or technical school.

Conroy was the head Baseball Coach at Shenandoah Valley for 16 years and passed away in 2015.

For the challenge, 16 participants competed to earn the right to be the one with the "Best Bundukies".  Each contestant created 3 dozen of their best bundukies, which are a Lithuanian recipe for pork meatballs and are very popular in the coal region.

10 judges taste tested each of the submissions.  The judges participating included Haley Bianco from Eyewitness News, Schuylkill County District Attorney Mike O'Pake, Doc from Froggy 101 in Wilkes Barre, Dave Lukashunas, Mayor Szczyglak, Mark Kowalonek, Ed Lizewski, Mike Petcavage, Dan Salvadore, and Jenna Velazquez.

After trying all the meatballs, Janet Antz was award 1st place, Jay O'Boyle placed 2nd, and Janelle & Christopher Cuff placed 3rd.

According to Judge Hayley Bianco, Antz will be invited to appear on PA Live in the near future.

The challenge started years ago in the kitchen of organizer, Kevin O'Boyle.

"We would have cooking competitions amongst ourselves, and we said let's make this community-wide" said Brian Conroy, son of William Conroy.
