Family of 3 Displaced After Mahanoy City Fire; American Red Cross Assisting

A family of 3 was displaced Friday afternoon after a fire tore through a section of row homes in Mahanoy City.


Just after 2:30pm, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 400 Block of Spruce Street for reports of a house fire.

According to Mahanoy City Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz, "As soon as I made the corner at Catawissa Street, I could see flames coming from the second floor".

The fire was quickly upgraded to a second alarm calling in additional units and manpower from around Schuylkill County.

Roughly an hour after the call came in, the fire was marked under control and by 4:10pm, units were being released from the scene.

According to Markiewicz, the fire started in 425 Spruce Street and spread in both directions, heavily damaging 427, 423 and 429 suffered some fire damage along with smoke and water, and 421 suffered smoke and water.

A family of 3, two adults and a child, from 429 Spruce Street are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Markiewicz said that the resident who lived in 423 was not home at the time.

The home where it started, along with 427 are reported to be recently unoccupied.

As of 5:00pm, a State Police Fire Marshal was at the scene with Mahanoy City Police and fire personnel to determine a cause.

No injuries were reported.
