Nesquehoning Train Derailment Closes Road, Cancels Classes, Leaves Big Cleanup

On Sunday afternoon, the derailment of 6 cars from a Reading Blue Mountain and Northern freight train caused a huge mess in the borough of Nesquehoning.

The incident happened just after 3:00pm, Sunday, nearing the track crossing with Mermon Avenue.  The derailment not only knocked the cars off the track but bent and broke the tracks along with railroad ties.

As of Monday morning, Carbon County Emergency Management did not have an estimated time for the cleanup and no cause was determined.

Mermon Avenue was closed since Monday and classes were cancelled for Panther Valley Elementary.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
