Some health-care organizations — including Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network in Allentown — are taking it a step further by assembling in-house teams to sew their own masks.
Despite being 50 miles away, the team from Pottsville Area Physical Therapy, A Service of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital, wanted to help the broader mask-making efforts at Good Shepherd’s Allentown campus however they could.
So, the Pottsville team got to work sewing at their site on Woodglen Road, temporarily transforming therapy tables into sewing tables.
“It has been cathartic in some ways, really,” says Carolyn Dunkelberger, PT, DPT, Pottsville site manager. “We all just want to do our part to keep our patients, staff and community safe at a time where all feel somewhat helpless. This has been an empowering and inspiring project knowing we can make a difference for the folks that will wear the masks we have produced.”
Stephanie Viduzinski, PTA, has led the Pottsville team’s efforts. Viduzinski showed how to measure and cut fabric to avoid waste, and provided instructions for how to sew the masks. Regional Manager Charlie Eberling, PT, DPT, TPI, who also is Good Shepherd's Fogelsville site manager, has gathered mask-making supplies from various shops near his home in Lancaster, PA, and delivered them to the Pottsville team.
Pottsville’s goal is to produce 100 masks, adding to the 1,000 masks sewn by fellow Good Shepherd Associates in Allentown. The handmade masks will extend Good Shepherd’s supply of N95 masks and other PPE.
“It is beautiful how our team came together, took on a task that is brand new and found comfort in the time we spent together,” says Dunkelberger.
