Schuylkill Country Club Turns 99

The Schuylkill Country Club (SCC), Orwigsburg, is preparing for its Centennial year celebration with a yearlong calendar of events up to and beyond the 100th year.

The Pottsville Republican announced its opening on May 10, 1921 with these enticing words. “The new club presents a most magnificent sight, the grounds adjoin the club house being beautifully laid out. A golf course and tennis court for the members promise to be in constant use.” The same could be said today, except for tennis courts there are now Pickleball courts, and a new pool with a renovated recreational center. In addition the original nine hole course was expanded and enhanced to eighteen holes designed by golf architect Donald Ross.

While the club is private through membership, it hosts many community events such as the annual Schuylkill Chamber dinner, weddings, showers and charity events. The country club is home to golf tournaments such as the Jason Jones Memorial, the Schuylkill Women in Crisis (SWIC) and functions for Special Olympics.

Herb Redman, general manager states: “The SCC is a relaxing retreat for its members, offering fine dining, golf, and summer pool activities. Family and friends gather as it’s a home away from home.”

The SCC is planning many activities to celebrate this year and into 2021. They include various golf tournaments on the “original nine” holes , a time capsule of memories to be opened in future years, a vintage fashion show , a John O’Hara book club event and of course a major gala in November 2021. In addition SCC is talking to various local artists to design an outside mural that will permit members to participate in its creation.

While the Covid-19 virus has slowed planning down a bit, including a delay in the May cocktail kick-off party, the club is determined to maintain its Schuylkill traditions and celebrate its arrival into its second century.

The Schuylkill Country Club is located at 877 W Market St, Orwigsburg.
