Tractor Trailers Restricted from Interstate 81 Due to Winter Storm


In response to Monday's winter weather conditions across the area, PennDOT is alerting motorists to a restriction change on Interstate 81 in the east central region of Pennsylvania. 

Late Monday, Tier 4 vehicle restrictions are in place on I-81 from Interstate 78 to the New York border.

On roadways with Tier 4 restrictions in place, no commercial vehicles are permitted. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place.

Tier 4 vehicle restrictions also remain in place on the following roads in east central Pennsylvania:
• Route 22 from Interstate 78 to the New Jersey border;
• The entire length of Route 33 in both directions;
• The entire length of Interstate 78 in both directions;
• Interstate 80 from Interstate 99 to the New Jersey border; and
• The entire length of Interstate 380 in both directions.

On roadways with Tier 4 restrictions in place, no commercial vehicles are permitted. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place. Speed limits have also been reduced to 45 mph on roadways with Tier 4 restrictions in place.

Speed limits are also restricted to 45 mph and commercial vehicles must move to the right lane on the following roadways:
• PA 309 from Interstate 78 to the Bucks County line in Lehigh County;
• US 222 in Berks County;
• US 422 in Berks County; and
• Interstate 176 in Berks County.

Additional speed and vehicle restrictions on these and other interstates could be added depending on changing conditions.
