Coal Cracker Kids Seeking Summer Participants

A youth-led news source in Schuylkill County is seeking summer participants to produce a newspaper and podcast.

Are you a young person with a story to share or a creative flair for photography? Coal Cracker Kids youth-led news is gearing up for a summer program to publish an edition of its popular newspaper and an associated podcast. Students from 8th through 12th grades from any school are invited to participate.

Advisor for the project will be Maggie Kergick, a 2015 graduate of North Schuylkill High School, who now teaches 8th grade English at Mahanoy Area School District. Kergick attended Lebanon Valley College to pursue a degree in English and Secondary Education. While in college, she was a Writing Mentor for fellow students, and studied abroad in Europe. She had previously taught at D.H.H. Lengel Middle School in Pottsville.

“I am very excited to be a part of Coal Cracker Kids and look forward to working with students of all backgrounds,” says Kergick.

Coal Cracker Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a mission to empower young people of Pennsylvania’s Anthracite Coal Region through youth-led projects that explore sense of place and promote professional development. Since 2014, it has published Coal Cracker Youth-led News, a quarterly print & online media outlet.

To participate in the summer project or for more information, email Kergick at advisor@coalcrackerkids.org by July 19. Meeting details will be provided.
