Anne was born in Shenandoah on February 23, 1933, daughter of Thomaz Zinkiewicz and Mary Sinkiewicz Zinkiewicz. She was the youngest and last surviving of 9 children to the Polish-speaking couple.
Anne attended St. Casimir’s Elementary School and was a hearty “Cakie” of Shenandoah Catholic High School where she excelled academically and graduated as Class Speaker. She continued her education at Misericordia Nursing School in Philadelphia where she received her RN degree.
As a high school soda jerk working at Burke’s Drug Store, she met her future husband Frank Ulicny, and their romance continued leading to marriage in St. Casimir’s Church on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1954.
The couple first lived a year in Philadelphia, moved to Mt. Carmel, and eventually back to Shenandoah in 1962.
Anne was jokingly referred to as St. Anne for having the grace and patience to raise her ten children, including seven rambunctious boys. She was revered by all members of her family as it grew… with in-laws through marriage and grandchildren and great grandchildren. Last count tallied 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Anne was a dedicated family historian keeping photos and albums along with both the Polish and Slovak family trees updated.
She was a great cook for the family, practically a caterer for the large crowd at every night’s dinner table. She was known for her cakes, baked from scratch, and sold at the Church Bingos at St. Stephen’s Hall. She was a leader in directing the church’s annual bazaars and an active member in church circles. She even served as a Den Mother in the local Cub Scout Troop.
Her children include: Peter of Shenandoah, Andrew with wife Debra of Shenandoah Heights, Mary wife of Paul Noon of Duncott, Daughter in Law Jane Ulicny (the late Frank) of New Boston, Thomas (late wife Debbie) of Shenandoah, Michael and wife Pam of Hegins, Daughter-in-Law Gerry Ulicny (the late Joe “Uzhu”) of New Philadelphia, Anne and husband Robert Taylor of Weston Place, Susan in adult care at Summit Station, and Stephen with wife Johanna of Tamaqua.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Oravitz Home for Funerals at 40 N. Jardin in Shenandoah. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 in Divine Mercy Parish, 218 W. Cherry St, Shenandoah, and will be celebrated by Msgr. Ronald Bocian. Burial with Graveside Services will immediately follow in St. Stephen’s Parish Cemetery in Shenandoah Heights
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations sent in her name to some of her favorite charities: Shenandoah Senior Living Community’s Activity Fund, Divine Mercy Parish, or The Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society.
