PennDOT Downgrades Interstate Restrictions to Tier 3 in East Central Pennsylvania

PennDOT has updated its temporary vehicle restrictions, downgrading Tier 4 restrictions to Tier 3 on several interstates and expressways across east central Pennsylvania as the winter storm continues to impact the region.

The updated restrictions are designed to help keep major roadways open during the most challenging conditions of the storm, while still limiting certain types of vehicles that are more likely to cause issues during heavy snow and icy conditions.

Roadways Under Tier 3 Restrictions

The following roadways are currently under Tier 3 vehicle restrictions:

  • Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties

  • Interstate 80 in Carbon and Monroe counties

  • Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County

  • Interstate 176 in Berks County

  • Interstate 380 in Monroe County

  • U.S. Route 22 in Lehigh and Northampton counties

  • Route 33 in Monroe and Northampton counties

What Tier 3 Restrictions Mean

Under Tier 3 restrictions:

  • No commercial vehicles are permitted, except for loaded single trailers with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices

  • The following vehicles are also not permitted:

    • School buses

    • Commercial buses and motor coaches

    • Motorcycles

    • RVs and motorhomes

    • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers

Speed Restrictions in Place

PennDOT has also implemented reduced speed limits of 45 mph on affected roadways for all vehicles while Tier 3 restrictions remain in effect.

Commercial vehicles that are permitted to travel must remain in the right lane. PennDOT noted that additional speed or vehicle restrictions could be added on other interstates depending on changing weather and road conditions.

Road Conditions Remain Hazardous

Although PennDOT crews have been actively treating roadways, officials emphasized that their primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow.

PennDOT will continue to treat roads throughout the storm until precipitation ends and roadways can be fully cleared.

Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to monitor 511PA for the latest road conditions and restriction updates.

Skook News will continue to provide updates as conditions change.
