Schuylkill Count Student Graduates from West Virginia University Summa Cum Laude

Samuel J. Sterns of Deer Lake, Pennsylvania, has completed his undergraduate studies at West Virginia University with high distinction, earning summa cum laude honors while graduating with dual bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering.

A 2021 salutatorian of Nativity BVM High School in Pottsville, Sterns distinguished himself both academically and through campus leadership during his time at WVU. He served as a University Ambassador and was the captain of the Mountaineers’ Formula 1 race car team, a competitive engineering program that challenges students to design, build, and race a high-performance vehicle.

Sterns credited his upbringing in the Coal Region for helping shape his work ethic and commitment to excellence.

“God, my family, and my education at St. Jerome’s and Nativity are why I have bright prospects for a rewarding career in engineering,” Sterns said.

Following his graduation, Sterns is currently interviewing with engineering firms throughout the Mid-Atlantic, East Coast, and Great Lakes regions, as he prepares to begin his professional career.

Family, friends, and the local community have expressed pride in Sterns’ accomplishments, celebrating a milestone that reflects both personal dedication and strong local roots.
