Vehicle Restrictions to Take Effect on Interstates, Turnpike During Winter Storm

PennDOT has announced that Tier 4 vehicle restrictions will go into effect beginning 12:01 a.m. Sunday, January 25, as a major winter storm is expected to impact central Pennsylvania.

The restrictions will apply to all Pennsylvania interstates, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its extensions, along with several other major roadways across the state.

Under Tier 4 restrictions, no commercial vehicles are permitted on affected roadways. In addition, the following vehicles will also be prohibited while restrictions are in place:

  • School buses
  • Commercial buses and motor coaches
  • Motorcycles
  • RVs and motorhomes
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers

PennDOT says the restrictions are being implemented to improve safety and allow road crews to more effectively treat roadways during the storm.

Winter Storm Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of central Pennsylvania, including Schuylkill County, from 10 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Monday.

Forecasters are calling for:

  • Snow totals between 10 and 18 inches
  • Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times on Sunday
  • Frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills before, during, and after the storm
  • Blowing and drifting snow, which could further reduce visibility and worsen travel conditions

Officials warn that travel will be very difficult to impossible, with widespread and prolonged disruptions expected throughout the region.

PennDOT urges motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and to monitor 511PA for the latest road conditions and restriction updates.
