Lois was a daughter of the late John and Pauline (Gerber) Holmberg. She attended Tamaqua High School and graduated from The Salvation Army Training College in New York to become an officer. It was while serving as a youth pastor in the Bronx that she met her future husband.
Lois worked for many years as a floor-lady/manager for Sue Frocks. A lifelong servant of The Salvation Army, she was honored in 2015 as a longtime Corps Sergeant Major, and her family was among the founding members of the Tamaqua corps. Lois lived her life grounded in kindness, generosity, and quiet faith. One of the most meaningful expressions of love was through the countless prayer squares she crocheted over the years – each one made with care and sent out into the world.
She also had a deep love from music. Lois was a talented musician who played both trumpet and cornet, and she had a beautiful singing voice that brought joy to those around her.
Lois is survived by two daughters, Kathi Charles of Palmerton, and Lisa Francis and her husband Brian of Auburn; one son, Robert Deutsch of Tamaqua; two brothers, Edward Holmberg of Ohio and Charles Holmberg and his wife Judy of Centre Valley; eight grandchildren, Ian and Jordan Totani, Hadyn and Daulton Charles, Eric and Rebecca Deutsch, and Madison and Mackenzie Francis; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on July 4th, 1925, she achieved her goal of celebrating 100 years of life. Lois was one of ten children. She was preceded in death by seven of her siblings. Her strong faith evokes images of a heavenly reunion.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the former Tamaqua Salvation Army building, now the Perla Building, 105 West Broad Street, Tamaqua. Interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Columbia and Church Streets, Tamaqua, will follow the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lois’s name may be made to The Salvation Army at www.salvationarmyusa.org.
Online condolences may be made at www.zgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Tamaqua.
