POTTSVILLE — Income-eligible homeowners in 14 Northern Schuylkill County communities could receive help with critical roof repairs and replacements through a new Schuylkill Community Action initiative.
The program, Raise the Roof – Northern Schuylkill County, is expected to assist eight to 10 households using funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund, known as PHARE.
Interest List Opens November 2
Schuylkill Community Action will accept calls to establish an interest list from through .
With limited funding available, households will be prioritized by the severity of their roof conditions rather than the order in which they contact the agency.
“Rather than incorporating a traditional first-come, first-served process, it is important that we focus these limited resources on the homes that need them most,” said Dave Young, chief executive officer of Schuylkill Community Action.
“A failing roof can lead to significant structural damage, unsafe living conditions, and further deterioration of our housing stock,” Young said. “By addressing these critical needs, we can help homeowners remain safely in their homes while preventing additional neighborhood blight.”
Communities Served by the Roof Repair Program
The initiative will serve income-eligible homeowners in the following six boroughs and eight townships:
- Boroughs: Ashland, Girardville, Frackville, Gilberton, Shenandoah and Mahanoy City.
- Townships: Butler, West Mahanoy, Mahanoy, Delano, Kline, Union, North Union and East Union.
Information Homeowners Will Need
Homeowners expressing interest will be asked to provide:
- Photographs and information documenting their roof conditions.
- Household composition and the ages of household members.
- Income verification for all household members.
- Proof of homeownership.
Income limits and other program eligibility requirements apply.
Preserving Homes and Preventing Blight
According to Schuylkill Community Action, prolonged economic challenges and disinvestment have contributed to deteriorating housing conditions in many Northern Schuylkill County communities.
The initiative is intended to preserve existing affordable housing, protect homeowners and strengthen neighborhood stability by addressing essential repairs.
