Miguel A. Mike Aponte of Tamaqua

Miguel A. “Mike” Aponte

Miguel A. “Mike” Aponte, 60, of Tamaqua and formerly of Abonito, Puerto Rico, passed away on .

Born on June 9, 1966, in Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Vicente Aponte and Aida L. Santiago.

Miguel was also preceded in death by his siblings Jose A. Rivera, Ivette Rivera and Omayra Rivera.

Miguel was a high school graduate and worked as a logistics technician for Highwood USA.

He was a devoted father, grandfather and brother who cherished the time spent with his family.

Surviving are his loving children, Denise Rivera, Luis Rivera, Jonathan Rivera, Miguel Rivera, Adam Aponte, Anthony Aponte and Bella Grace Aponte; 12 grandchildren; and siblings Jose Rivera, Maria Rivera, Rachel Rivera, Eclaniz Rivera, Francisco Rivera, Liz N. Rivera and Liz A. Rivera.

Miguel will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and the memories he leaves behind. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 655 East Broad Street, Tamaqua.

A viewing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on , with a funeral service beginning at 3 p.m.


Carolyn Harris of Hegins

Carolyn Harris

Carolyn Harris, 85, of Hill Road, Hegins, passed away with her family by her side on , at her residence.

Born in Hegins on April 8, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Viola Long Bloch.

She attended Tri-Valley schools and was employed as a sewing machine operator at local garment factories, most recently at Alma Dress Factory in Shenandoah Heights.

She was a member of the Citizens Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary in Gordon and a former member of Simpson United Methodist Church, also in Gordon.

Carolyn loved gardening, making gowns and dirt-track racing at Big Diamond Speedway near Minersville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Harris, who passed away on February 22, 2007; a son, Mark R. Harris, who passed away on November 18, 2023; and a daughter, Cathy Zerbe, who passed away on May 26, 2019.

Surviving are:

  • Sons: Gerald Harris and his wife, Mel, of Ashland; William Harris and his wife, Tammy, of Hegins; and Timothy Harris of Ashland.
  • Daughters: Robin Hubler of Gordon and Ruthann, wife of Bruce Imhof, of Erdman.
  • Stepson: Keith Harris and his wife, Cindy, of Ravine.
  • Son-in-law: Carl Zerbe of Valley View.
  • Grandchildren: 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
  • Many good friends, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at the convenience of her family at a later date.

Paul Reed Sonny Boltz Jr. of Orwigsburg

Paul Reed “Sonny” Boltz Jr.

Paul Reed “Sonny” Boltz Jr., 92, of Orwigsburg, passed away on , at Reading Hospital.

Sonny was born in Pottsville on June 18, 1934, a son of the late Emma Frances Weand Boltz and Paul Reed Boltz Sr.

Married for 66 years, he was the loving husband of Ruth Ann Morgan Boltz.

Sonny graduated from Pottsville High School in 1955 and also attended Penn State University.

He owned and operated Jacob Boltz Knitting Mill and Pinedale Golf Center and worked as an agent for Boltz Insurance Agency.

He was an avid collector and enjoyed being outdoors, but above all else, Sonny lived for his family. He was a beloved husband, father and friend.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Christa Boltz and Frederick Boltz, and his grandson, Paul Russell, all of Orwigsburg.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on , at Ebling-Stabingas Funeral Home in Cressona. A celebration of life memorial service will follow at 3 p.m., with Paul Moyer officiating.

Interment will be held privately.

Dorothy Ann Chekan

Dorothy Ann Chekan, 93, of Port Carbon, passed away surrounded by her family on , at her home.

Born in Minersville on June 23, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Edna Pogirski Morasky.

Dorothy was a graduate of Cass Township High School. She worked as a sales clerk for Boscov’s and Pomeroy’s.

She was a member of the former St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Port Carbon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Paul Chekan, who died on November 23, 2020.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Fees and Kathleen Chekan, both of Port Carbon; five grandchildren, Eric Fees and his wife, Michelle, Keith Fees and his wife, Jenn, Brad Fees and his wife, Mercedes, Melissa Webster and her husband, Brian, and Jeffrey Haslam and his wife, Brandi; 11 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Tinsley, Linden, Jacob, Kyle and his wife, Emily, Julie, Norah, Quinn, Klay and Harrison; and a sister, Elizabeth Miller of New Cumberland.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on , at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, with Deacon John Setlock officiating.

There will be no procession from the funeral home to the cemetery.

The Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home in Port Carbon is in charge of arrangements.
