The Orwigsburg Police Department has released information that they have filed charges against 3 individuals stemming from an incident where they responded to shots being fired in the borough.

On Tuesday, December 17, 2013, Orwigsburg Borough Police, Schuylkill Haven, Penn State University, and State Police responded to the 400 block of West Cherry Street at 11:08pm for a report of shots being fired.

When officers arrived they found  3 individuals in a vehicle and 1 standing outside.

When police approached the men, they found Jeffrey D. Roberts, 20, displaying a handgun.  Roberts is being charged with a gun violation as well as another weapons offense for a different weapon that he also had in his possession that night.  He also charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Another male has also been charged, Edward Daley, 19, with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Charges were filed for both men with Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, which will require both men to report to court for their charges.

A third man, Christopher Johnston, 21, the male who was standing outside the vehicle, was found through investigation to be the one who initially brought the handgun to the incident.  During the course of a verbal and physical altercation, Johnston fired one round from the handgun.  No one was struck by the round when it was fired.

Johnston was also found to be in possession of a homemade explosive device, which was rendered safe by police the night of the incident.

Johnston has been charged with aggravated assault, weapons of mass destruction, possession of a firearm by someone not allowed, receiving stolen property, prohibited weapons offenses, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, and disorderly conduct.

Johnston was arrested by Orwigsburg Patrolmen Matthew Fogarty and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier who set a $20,000 straight cash bail. He remains in Schuylkill County Prison on unrelated charges.
