Multiple Injuries, One Flown, After Interstate 81 Crash Friday

Multiple people including a toddler were injured in crash that closed Interstate 81 for over 2 hours Friday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred just before 5:00pm when Brianna McPeak, 29, of Mount Carmel was travelling south on Interstate 81 near Milemarker 134.2 and for unknown reasons left the southbound shoulder, crossed the median, through a guardrail and into oncoming northbound traffic.

McPeak's vehicle struck head on an oncoming vehicle driven by Megan Kufro, 35, of Frackville.  A toddler was also in the vehicle with Kufro.

Both vehicles came to rest blocking both northbound lanes.  The northbound lanes were closed for nearly 2 hours after the incident.  Traffic was diverted off the Delano exit.

Police say McPeak was severely injured and appeared not to be seatbelted.  She was attended by the McAdoo Ambulance and transported via Medivac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Cedar Crest.

Kufro was reported to have been securely seatbelted and was shaken up.  The toddler in the vehicle suffered a minor nosebleed.  Both were transported to Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Hazleton for observation.

Assisting Police at the scene were Delano Township Fire Company, Ryan Township Rescue, McAdoo Ambulance, and Ryan Township Ambulance.

McPeak is expected to be charged in the crash.
