UPDATE: Girardville Man Surrenders After Short Standoff

A Girardville man surrendered after a short standoff Wednesday evening.

According to Girardville Police, around 9:30pm, Assistance was requested to serve Protection From Abuse on a John Weikel Sr at 344 E Mahanoy Ave., Girardville.

The arriving Officer noticed Weikel was holding a handgun and after commanding him to drop the gun, Weikel ran inside the home firing 2 shots.

Police requested backup from area police and East Mahanoy Avenue (Route 54) was closed from Second Street to Connerton Road.

Police were able to speak to Weikel via phone. where he surrendered a short time later and taken into custody. 

Assisting at the scene were Police from Frackville. Ashland. Butler Township, West Mahanoy Township. Mt Carmel. Shenandoah and the Pennsylvania State Police.

East Mahanoy Avenue was closed for about an hour during the incident and traffic control was handled by Girardville Fire.
