Two Injured in Monday Afternoon Crash on Interstate 81

Two people were injured and flown after a crash on Interstate 81 Monday Afternoon.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, Francis Race, 49, of Coal Township was travelling south on Interstate 81 near mile marker 109 when he drove off the highway, striking a roadside sign, traveling 100 feet down an embankment, then hitting several trees.  The vehicle reportedly went airborne before coming to a rest suspended in the trees.

Race reportedly suffered serious injuries in the crash.  His passenger, Judy Long, 69, of Sunbury was also injured.

Both had to be cut from the vehicle and were flown to Hershey Medical Center.

Fire crews responding to the scene of the crash were Hegins Valley Fire Rescue, Ravine Fire Company, and Donaldson Fire Compnay, with Hegins Area Ambulance and Pine Grove Area Ambulance.

Fire crews that responded to the landing zone were Jolliett Fire Company and Muir Fire Company.
