Man in Custody After Shooting Saturday Morning in Pottsville

A man is in custody after a shooting in Pottsville Saturday Morning.

According to Pottsville Police Chief Richard Wojciechowsky, on Saturday morning around 3:30am, police investigated an incident at 319 W. Arch Street in which a 38 year old Pottsville man was struck in the head with a handgun and then shot in the right forearm by John Liptok Sr, 38, Pottsville.

Upon initial arrival by police Liptok Sr. had already fled the scene. The victim was transported from the scene to a medical facility for treatment and later released. The investigation showed that the victim had been arguing with a 30 year old woman at that address when Liptok intervened and eventually shot Berry. Two children, ages 1 and 3, were also inside the apartment when the incident took place.

During the course of the investigation Liptok was taken into custody by Sgt. John Mohl in the area of 3rd and Arch Streets when Liptok returned to the area on foot. At the time of his arrest Liptok was in possession of a Springfield .45 caliber handgun with a loaded magazine. Investigators also learned Liptok was a prohibited from possessing firearms.

Cpl. Renee Truscott prepared a criminal complaint charging Liptok with Attempted Criminal Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Persons not to possess Firearms, Firearms not to be carried without a License, 4 counts of Recklessly endangering another person, Possessing instruments of crime, and Simple Assault. 

Liptok was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Rossi and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $100,000.00 bail.
